    Was Danial in the army? This would explain his late marriage (he is noted as single on his marriage certificate). His son was in the army. This was unusual, but not if your father was Irish and had been in the Army.

    Two possibilities found to date neither of which are really convincing:

    * 84th Foot - 1 July 1815 to 10 Oct 1822

    * 95th Foot - 6 Apr 1808 to 24 Jun 1811

    The first has the birth date closer, but he was discharged for varicose veins so hard to see how he became a platelayer. The second, has the occupation as a shoemaker which I suppose is not excluded.

    Bermuda

    The British Army built and manned more than 80 Bermuda Forts. They included military artists for detailed records. Their landscapes and seascapes showed how Bermuda developed as a naval base and land fortress bristling with heavy guns that could heave first cannonballs then shells many miles out to sea. From the American Civil War, British troops occupied a huge area in Devonshire Parish alone. Huge Fort Prospect - seen here but no longer around - was their headquarters.

    They also made good use of every other Parish. Some places they built are now used by the Bermuda Police Service. In the 1840s, the British Army built roads long before the American military did in the 1950s). British troops paved and repaired the original military (now a civilian) road from Fort Prospect in Pembroke Parish to the Royal Naval Dockyard in the west and the garrison town of St. George's in the east - and erected the rifle range at what used to be the British Army training camp on the Old Military South Road - now the South Road - in Warwick Parish. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_Camp_(Bermuda).

    1870 to 1873. 69th Foot (The South Lincolnshire Regiment)

    It arrived from Canada and after the Bermuda posting, which included a period from November 1871 on Boaz Island to help protect HM Dockyard Bermuda, went to Gibraltar. Hardly mentioned at all in Bermuda records, but from reliable Scottish resources, one of its officers in Canada, Bermuda and Gibraltar was Harry Aubrey de Vere Maclean, born in Chatham, Kent in 1848 (whose father was Inspector General of Army Medical Services). Later, Maclean became commander of the Sultan of Morocco's Army, adopted Moorish costume, was one of the heads of the Moroccan delegation to attend the coronation of King Edward VII.

Kirkdale

"The township comprises 652 acres of land. Immediately beneath the surface is a deep layer of the finest clay for bricks; and below the clay, in most parts, are rocks of red sandstone. The vicinity of Kirkdale to Liverpool, with which town it is now joined, has greatly and rapidly increased the population, and the value of the land, on which several hundred houses have been erected within the last fifty years. The new docks of Liverpool extend the whole breadth of the township, northward, along the shore of the Mersey; and the township is also intersected from south to north by the Liverpool and Leeds canal, the great road leading to Ormskirk, Preston, &c., and by the Liverpool and Bury, and the Liverpool, Ormskirk, and Preston railways. The only cotton-mill of which Liverpool can boast, is in Kirkdale; it was built in 1838, and employs 950 hands: the operations are confined to spinning."

Walton on the Hill

"The parish consists of the district parish of West Derby; the chapelries of Everton, Formby, and Kirkby; and the townships of Bootle with Linacre, Fazakerley, Kirkdale, Simonswood, and Walton. The area of the whole is 22,195 acres, and the lands are irrigated by the river Alt and the Rimrose brook, both tributary to the Mersey, which for the most part bounds the parish on the west: much of the soil is arable. In Walton township are 2230 acres. This locality presents an extremely pleasing appearance, and abounds in handsome mansions and villas; from Walton Hill are most extensive views, including the town of Liverpool, the Welsh hills, and the mountains of Cumberland. Among the best houses are Walton Hall, the residence of Richard Naylor, Esq.; Walton Priory, that of Robert Ellison Harvey, Esq.; and several detached mansions on Breeze Hill. On the side of the Ormskirk road is the unique establishment of Charles Whitfield Harvey, Esq., the successful rearer of prize-cattle; and Spellow House, an ancient mansion of stone, is surrounded by a large tract of land, appropriated by Mr. William Skirving to the rearing of foresttrees and nursery-plants in general, including those of the most rare description. "

Liverpool Parish Church

1699 Liverpool was granted parish status (St Peters) until then it had been part of the Parish of Walton on the Hill which was outside the town boundary.

Liverpool aldermen aspired to self-governance without any central interference. For a large part of the period 1207 to 1800, they succeeded insofar as they controlled the fees from burgages, rents, trade, markets, the ferries, the town mills, etc. They also enjoyed certain legal privileges in respect of trade matters etc. However, there was a thorn in their side. They did not have a parish church and so religious matters were governed by the Parish of Walton on the Hill which was completely outside the Liverpool boundary (they had a chapel of ease, St Nicholas which Liverpool residents used). So there was no overlap as such Walton just dictated on religious points. It also had the only cemetery.

In 1699, they petitioned Parliament and eventually got their Parish church, St Peters in 1700. They also built St Georges in 1734. Liverpools councillors would ostentatiously parade from the Town Hall, down Castle Street, to St Georges every Sunday. The church was both owned and maintained by the City Council and it was the place of worship for the mayor, council and judiciary. Insofar, as the churches existence depended on the actions of the Council, the Vestry was probably quite closely aligned to Council membership in the 18th century.

Liverpool: St Mary's Cemetery, Kirkdale

St. Mary's Cemetery, named for the nearby St. Mary's Church, was opened as a public cemetery in 1836. Upwards of 47,500 internments spanned sixty one years from 3 August 1837 to 5 November 1898. The church endured longer closing in 1973. It was demolished in 1979. The cemetery had no association with the church.

In 1897, the City of Liverpool petitioned Parliament to close several burial grounds, including St. Mary's Cemetery, Walton Road, Kirkdale, with the intent of converting them into ornamental open spaces. In 1898, the cemetery was acquired by Liverpool Corporation and officially closed on 28 Dec 1898. It was opened as Lester Gardens on 10 July 1905 and named for Canon Thomas Major Lester (1829-1903) who was vicar of St. Mary's Church for over 50 years. The entrance to the cemetery still stands adjacent to 61 Walton Road.
